Lifehook L-Series No. 55

For many years, training an apprentice to safely climb a utility pole has been an area of special concern for employers and regulatory agencies alike.   Employees undergoing training are not qualified climbers and have a much greater likelihood of incurring injuries.  Training programs must comply with OSHA 1910.269 and 1926.502 requirements in order to protect against fall hazards and related injuries the trainee may be exposed to while climbing.

Lately, the buzz is about how to also voluntarily adopt techniques for 100% connection.  For a qualified and experienced climber, transitioning from traditional positioning straps to choking travel restraint straps helps meet the goal, however, it is important to note that these products alone cannot protect the climbing apprentice from the larger range of potential injuries unique to the training environment.  Additionally, ANSI Z359.3 states work positioning and travel restraint systems must be used in conjunction with a separate and independent personal fall arrest system.

The Lifehook L-Series was developed to be the key component of a complete fall protection solution for utility training.  It is compatible with programs that train in traditional free climbing techniques as well as those that train in 100% connection.  The L55 protects against the fall hazard while allowing the climber unrestricted mobility on the pole, eliminating potential injuries of a swing fall, and preventing the danger of injuries to the climber from striking or otherwise contacting the pole while arresting a fall.

The many benefits of Lifehook products have been noted by training professionals from coast to coast.  More than a mere compliance product, Lifehook users have documented higher efficiency and productivity in their climber training programs as well as higher worker morale.  Users have found fewer terminations and apprentices dropping out from a “fear of falling”.  They have reported a 20% increase in how quickly the apprentice acquires their pole climbing skills.  Additionally, the injuries that Lifehook products prevent result in less training down time and significant reductions in worker injury compensation claims.

The L-Series is the first device of its kind, and after years of field-tested service, continues to lead through advanced design.  The rotating davit features a low mass and an open architecture that is least affected by prevailing winds, important when training outdoors on a breezy day.  A longer offset of the SRL attachment point keeps the line behind the climber’s center of gravity to better prevent contact with the pole when arresting a fall.

The L55 is available with a choice of adjustable mounting brackets designed to reinforce the upper section of utility pole while eliminating pressure points when under the load of arresting a fall.  Once properly installed on a plumb pole, the Lifehook will not require ongoing adjustments to remain level.

The Lifehook L-Series is most recognized for offering the market segment’s only hot-dip galvanized finish, a rust-proof coating that provides outstanding durability over all competing utility training anchors.  The L55 can also be provided in a cost-effective enamel finish of Royal blue with other colors and color combinations available by special request.

Each unit is proof-tested to 5500 lb. exceeding federal regulatory minimum strength requirements.  Inspection, maintenance, and retesting is available for the service life of the product with a suggested interval of every two to five years.   These anchors are compatible with several brands of personal fall arrest components; please contact a distributor for more information.

Lifehook FB-Series No. 6

Lifehook products are designed to mitigate the dangerous fall hazard the apprentice climber is exposed to while preventing secondary injuries from striking the pole, or other contact with the pole, when arresting a fall. Patented FB6 systems provide compliance with OSHA 1910.269 and 1926.502 requirements. They can help increase your training program productivity through fewer “fear of falling” terminations, fewer worker injury compensation claims, and an accelerated acquisition of climbing skills for your trainee.

The FB-Series was developed with all of the research and safety engineering of the original, but with the additional versatility of being used either alone or with another Lifehook product for training two climbers on the same pole. A system specified in this manner is compliant with federal strength requirements and has the advantage of allowing each worker to climb independently over other two-man systems.

The FB6 can be mounted at any height on the utility pole that has a diametric span between six and nine inches. The system can be easily repositioned to greater heights on the pole as the trainee gains additional climbing skills. The compact design of the device allows for transportability to field test potential apprentices away from the main facility, or to retrain climbers at multiple locations.

The strong, lightweight davit rotates up to 250º on a solid axle of high tensile steel. It is furnished permanently assembled for superior strength and durability. Utilizing specific low-friction bearings, the davit rotates quickly and predictably to align with the climber. The climber has unencumbered mobility around two thirds of the utility pole.

The adjustable mounting bracket features a provision which allows the unit to be positioned hands-free during installation and which, will prevent the device from shifting on the pole when the system is under the load of forces generated while arresting a fall. Installed on a plumb utility pole, the heavy-duty FB6 will remain level through continued use.

Each unit is proof-tested to 5500 lb. exceeding federal regulatory minimum strength requirements. Inspection, maintenance, and retesting is available to maintain compliance for the service life of the product with a recommended interval of every two to five years.

The FB6 includes a fully assembled rotating davit and base, installation bracket straps and all necessary hardware. An enamel finish of Royal blue is standard. Safety colors, custom colors, and color combinations are available by special request.

Lifehook products are compatible with several brands of personal fall arrest components. Systems can be configured for programs that train in traditional free climbing techniques as well as those that train in 100% connection. The FB-Series can be ordered as part of a system with 30 foot, 50 foot, and 65 foot self-retracting lifelines that can arrest a free fall within 24 inches. Please contact your nearest distributor for more information.
