Lifehook L-Series No. 55
For many years, training an apprentice to safely climb a utility pole has been an area of special concern for employers and regulatory agencies alike. Employees undergoing training are not qualified climbers and have a much greater likelihood of incurring injuries. Training programs must comply with OSHA 1910.269 and 1926.502 requirements in order to protect against fall hazards and related injuries the trainee may be exposed to while climbing.
Lately, the buzz is about how to also voluntarily adopt techniques for 100% connection. For a qualified and experienced climber, transitioning from traditional positioning straps to choking travel restraint straps helps meet the goal, however, it is important to note that these products alone cannot protect the climbing apprentice from the larger range of potential injuries unique to the training environment. Additionally, ANSI Z359.3 states work positioning and travel restraint systems must be used in conjunction with a separate and independent personal fall arrest system.
The Lifehook L-Series was developed to be the key component of a complete fall protection solution for utility training. It is compatible with programs that train in traditional free climbing techniques as well as those that train in 100% connection. The L55 protects against the fall hazard while allowing the climber unrestricted mobility on the pole, eliminating potential injuries of a swing fall, and preventing the danger of injuries to the climber from striking or otherwise contacting the pole while arresting a fall.
The many benefits of Lifehook products have been noted by training professionals from coast to coast. More than a mere compliance product, Lifehook users have documented higher efficiency and productivity in their climber training programs as well as higher worker morale. Users have found fewer terminations and apprentices dropping out from a “fear of falling”. They have reported a 20% increase in how quickly the apprentice acquires their pole climbing skills. Additionally, the injuries that Lifehook products prevent result in less training down time and significant reductions in worker injury compensation claims.
The L-Series is the first device of its kind, and after years of field-tested service, continues to lead through advanced design. The rotating davit features a low mass and an open architecture that is least affected by prevailing winds, important when training outdoors on a breezy day. A longer offset of the SRL attachment point keeps the line behind the climber’s center of gravity to better prevent contact with the pole when arresting a fall.
The L55 is available with a choice of adjustable mounting brackets designed to reinforce the upper section of utility pole while eliminating pressure points when under the load of arresting a fall. Once properly installed on a plumb pole, the Lifehook will not require ongoing adjustments to remain level.
The Lifehook L-Series is most recognized for offering the market segment’s only hot-dip galvanized finish, a rust-proof coating that provides outstanding durability over all competing utility training anchors. The L55 can also be provided in a cost-effective enamel finish of Royal blue with other colors and color combinations available by special request.
Each unit is proof-tested to 5500 lb. exceeding federal regulatory minimum strength requirements. Inspection, maintenance, and retesting is available for the service life of the product with a suggested interval of every two to five years. These anchors are compatible with several brands of personal fall arrest components; please contact a distributor for more information.
